Regardless of whether your son/daughter is ready to access a student boarding facility at primary, secondary or tertiary level, as parents you are faced with the same level of concern regarding their welfare.
- First and foremost is the task of selecting a school that offers the chosen curriculum coupled with a boarding facility that is acceptable to both parents and the student. The NARSA Student Accommodation Guide provides some assistance in this area by listing a large number of residential colleges and rural student hostels that are available in every State of Australia.
- The Indigenous Youth Mobility Programme (IYMP) is part of the Australian Government’s Indigenous Australians Opportunity and Responsibility commitment for students who have completed their secondary schooling and are seeking further accommodation while they continue their studies. More information is available in IYMP Host Locations.
- Over a number of years the NARSA Office has gathered together a collection of books, videos and DVDs that cover a range of topics relating to teenage behaviour and the ensuing issues that confront their parents. You are invited to access the list of these resources which are contained in the NARSA Lending Library and find out how to borrow them free of charge.
- Students need time to assimilate into life in a boarding facility where they must learn to live closely with other students, many of whom they may not have known before. Some students settle in quickly while others may view the experience as a long holiday away from home and act accordingly. Senior students who perhaps may find it difficult to prioritise their calendar might benefit from the Study Skills Guide which can assist them to formulate good study habits, especially when preparing for exams.
- Reconnect, a free and confidential service, provides support and opportunities for young people and their families. This Australia-wide organisation offers both telephone and face-to-face assistance to young people who may be experiencing difficulties in their life.
